Common questions about doula support

Welcome. You may have questions about doula services, especially given my background. Below, I’ve answered some of the most common ones to explain how my combination of clinical knowledge and holistic support can assist you throughout your birth experience.

Can a doula help even if I am having a planned c-section?
Absolutely. A doula can provide invaluable support during a planned caesarean birth. While the medical team focuses on the surgery itself, I focus on you, helping you feel calm, informed, and emotionally supported before & after the birth.

Before birth, we’ll prepare together by discussing your preferences, understanding the procedure, and planning for the first moments with your baby. On the day, I can support you and your partner with reassurance, advocacy where appropriate, and guidance around skin-to-skin, feeding, and those important first hours.

How does your background as a paramedic help you support your clients differently from other doulas?

My unique background as a registered paramedic and my extensive maternity studies allow me to blend clinical insight with deep knowledge and experience of holistic birth practices. I understand the importance of good communication, can help you decipher medical jargon, and bridge the gap between medical care and your personal birth preferences.

What is a doula and how is it different from a midwife?

A doula provides continuous non-medical physical, emotional, and informational support to a birthing person before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike a midwife, who provides medical care, a doula focuses purely on holistic support, advocacy, and helping you achieve your desired birth experience.

When should I hire a doula?

It's never too early or too late to consider hiring a doula. Many clients choose to engage my services in their second trimester, allowing ample time for prenatal meetings and building a strong relationship. However, I can also provide support for those seeking a doula closer to their due date.

For women facing complex pregnancies, IVF, or previous birth trauma, what are their most common worries, and how do you typically reassure them?

Many worry about previous trauma reoccurring or feeling a loss of control. My role is to help you reclaim that control and empower you with knowledge and strategies to navigate any situation that arises, ensuring you feel supported and heard throughout your journey, regardless of its complexities.

Do you offer support for partners too?

Yes, absolutely! My support extends to partners, helping them understand their role, feel more confident, and offering guidance on how best to support the birthing person. A well supported partner is invaluable to the birth team.
